Abstract: |
The watching brief was maintained on a site which lay within the area formerly enclosed by the outer precinct of the Priory of St John of Jerusalem (Knights Hospitaller). The slow development of the outer precinct in the medieval period was to an extent confirmed by the almost complete absence of finds of this date from the site. A substantial increase in the rate of pit digging and rubbish dumping seemed to have occured in the 17th century. The continued absence of structural remains of this date indicated that the area most probably still formed part of the gardens of properties on Turnmill Street. It was not possible to identify any features associated with the laying out of Britton Street in the early 18th century. [Au] |
