Abstract: |
Following the completion of excavation and a preliminary assessment of the results, it was decided that a watching brief should be carried out over the installation of an interceptor tank and the excavation of the drainage trench. A section of the possible platform of the early medieval castle was revealed, and embedded in this were the well-preserved remains of wattle fencing. No sign of pre-medieval activity was seen. Sewage deposits overlay the platform and a drain had been cut through them (probably part of the 14th-16th century 'Lothburne' town sewer) in an attempt to drain them. A series of post-medieval walls were also seen. [Au(abr)] |
