Abstract: |
A test pit excavated against the western face of the surviving west gable wall of St. John's Hospital, Winchelsea revealed that the wall stood on a foundation course between c.600-650mm below existing ground level. Establishing the full depth of these foundations fell outside the scope of this project. A linear feature containing a 14th to mid 15th century pottery sherd, which may have functioned as a drain, ran parallel with the western face of the wall and cut a small, partially exposed feature located adjacent to the foundations. It was not possible to establish the relationship of this feature with the foundation. [Au] |
