Abstract: |
A proposed foodstore development on the western edge of the town centre lay within an Area of Archaeological Interest as designated by Babergh District Council. No archaeolgocial finds had been recorded from the application site although Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon pottery was found in soil from the High Street frontage at no. 85. Extant buildings fronting onto the High Street included timber-framed structures of 15th to 17th century date. The Brett Works may have occupied the site of a post-medieval tan yard. There was limited potential for prehistoric material on the site; cropmarks of Bronze Age burial mounds were known along the river valley north of the town. Infrequent Romano-British finds from Hadleigh indicated a low level of local occupation. A church site to the south may have been the nucleus of an Anglo-Saxon royal vill, but no Anglo-Saxon or medieval manorial features were known within the application site. [Au] |
