Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of pits for the installation of a new lighting scheme within a churchyard. A small excavation in advance of building works in the churchyard in 1978 had revealed archaeological remains which included an undated post-pit, a crouched burial, Mesolithic flints and a sherd of Roman pottery. During the watching brief, the top of a brick vault which was probably Georgian or later was encountered, and disarticulated human bone fragments and medieval pottery, including one waster, were recovered. It was concluded that, although the watching brief had been limited in scope, the results implied that the area near to the west side of the west tower had been subject to disturbance of a type likely to have disrupted shallow archaeological deposits.
