Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks for a new sewer. The excavation of two trial pits and two much larger shafts was monitored. The site was located within an area of archaeological potential, and close to the historic centre of Plumstead. Map evidence showed that Lakedale Road itself was in existence by 1800, although much of the surrounding development was later. The watching brief did not reveal any archaeological features or finds, although natural deposits were generally exposed throughout the excavated areas. The ground below the modern road make-up was extensively disturbed by recent service trenches. Localised deposits over natural probably represented a truncated soil profile, but there were no finds and (despite the cartographic evidence) no evidence for earlier road construction. The highest surviving natural was found about 0.8m to 0.9m below present ground level. This consisted of a sandy layer with pebbles over sandy gravel, and at a much lower level slightly silty sand. This last was probably the top of the Thanet Sand, whilst the overlying strata may have represented a downhill movement of Woolwich and Reading Beds. [Au(abr)] |
