Abstract: |
Excavation and a gradiometer survey were undertaken at Milsom's Corner, a field which lay on the lower slopes of Cadbury Castle Iron Age hillfort, as part of the South Cadbury Environs Project. The geophysical survey revealed a number of linear features of varying positive intensity in one area, which represented more than one phase of activity. The results proved better than expected for clayey soils, and were encouraging enough for the project to resolve to survey a complete circumference of Cadbury Castle. Excavation revealed evidence of Early Bronze Age activity and Late Bronze Age to Late Iron Age settlement and industry, which were assigned to seven phases. Features included burnt mounds and two structures of the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age, an articulated neonatal skeleton accompanied by a single rim/wall sherd of a globular vessel of Late Middle Iron Age fabric, and substantial packed posts of the same phase as the burial.
