Abstract: |
<summary>A survey of Pershore Great Bridge (Scheduled Ancient Monument, Here & Worc 321) was undertaken in the autumn of 1990, as a condition of Scheduled Monument Consent, when repairs were carried out by Hereford & Worcester County Council. Renovation work included repointing 75% of the parapet and minor stone replacement. Photogrammetric survey was used as the basis for recording stone types, and the extent of new mortar and stone was also recorded. The bridge, first documented in 1290, is mainly constructed of Cotswold limestone with a brick parapet. It has triangular refuges and cutwaters on the upstream side only and has been much patched and repaired over the centuries. The central arch, destroyed during the Civil War, was rebuilt in red sandstone. The masonry at the base of the piers had been repaired in the past with materials which were not related to the original fabric. When the modern brick skin was removed from one of these areas, a much older surface of large limestone blocks was revealed. This was recorded and the resulting drawing used as a template for new limestone facing. {italon}Au{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM5574 |
