Abstract: |
A recorded observation was undertaken during the excavation of the foundations of the new development across the site in order to fulfil a condition upon the planning consent. There was much disturbance across the site, most of which was due to the removal of the 1970's building foundations. A brick rectangular structure, probably a 20th century vaulted sump, and a cavity were located across the site. This cavity manifested itself as a semi-circular collapse on the north facing section in the natural chalk face some 2m down. The cavity appeared to extend back some 2m or so and its 'roof' was roughly semi-circular in appearance. It was felt probable that the cavity continued in the unexcavated area. The author was unable to ascertain wHether the base of the foundation was on undisturbed chalk. The only other feature revealed was a rectangular pit located in the southwestern corner of the building which as filled with demolition debris. [Au(adp)] |
