Abstract: |
An excavation was undertaken on a section of ditch prior to the planting of a screen of trees. The ditch had been identified by previous geophysical survey and trial excavation. Results show the ditch dates from around 12th to 15th centuries. There was no indication, in the excavated area, of a bank although the asymmetry of one of the lower fills of the ditch implied a bank to the east. The ditch appeared to have slowly silted up until it was probably leveled to facilitate agricultural use of the field last century. Worked flint found in the ditch suggested knapping and domestic activities of a late prehistoric date, in the immediate vicinity. [Au(abr)] |
