Abstract: |
A desk based assessment of a proposed development site was undertaken. Prehistoric artefacts recorded in the area included palaeolithic and mesolithic flints, neolithic pottery and bronze age and iron age metalwork. Mortlake High Street followed the line of the original medieval street. The site of the medieval Archbishop of Canterbury's Palace and several 18th and 19th century Listed Buildings lay along the high street. A geological map of the site indicated that it lay directly on river terrace gravels, with no capping of alluvium, so that any archaeological deposits present would not be deeply buried and could have been affected by post-medieval construction, particularly in the western half of the site. An evaluation was recommended, due to the site's potential for medieval deposits. [AIP] |
