Abstract: |
A detailed geophysical survey was carried out along the planned route of a new drainage system and tanks compound. The geophysical survey employed a portable fluxgate gradiometer with the aim of detecting anomalies in magnetic susceptibility and permanent magnetism associated with subsurface archaeological features. The study extended for a distance of about 1560m west of Brunton Lane. A significant fraction of the study area was found to have been covered with a deposit of strongly magnetic surface material, which probably reflected a surface scatter of brick and iron debris. In places, this intense anomaly field may have prevented the detection of more subtle geomagnetic anomalies of possible archaeological interest. Geophysical evidence was presented for the existence of weak traces of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. However, the survey failed to locate any features implying associated settlement activity within the area investigated. A length of possible soil-filled ditch was detected traversing the proposed underground tanks compound. A group of intense magnetic dipoles in the same area may have indicated in situ fired structures, such as kilns or hearths. However, it was equally likely that the anomalies may have reflected recent bonfires or large items of magnetic surface debris. Hence, archaeological characterisation of these and other features inferred by the geophysical survey would require a further programme of research involving selective trial trenching or an archaeological watching brief.
