Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which lay within an Archaeological Priority Area. An Iron Age gold coin had been found 500m to the east of the site, and the road which formed the northern site boundary had been documented since 1549. A house and garden and a hospital had been constructed on the site in the 19th century. During the evaluation, evidence of mineral extraction, believed to have occurred during construction of the hospital, was observed. No archaeological deposits pre-dating the 19th century were revealed, with the possible exception of a possible relict soil observed within one evaluation trench. It was concluded that the mineral extraction could perhaps have removed any archaeological evidence which may have existed at the site. [AIP] |
