Abstract: |
Prehistoric features were located throughout the entire trench. These comprised ditches, post holes and stake holes, which truncated the natural sand. Conditions on the site had resulted in the preservation of wood and several stake tips were present. Of particular interest was an oak and share tip recovered from the fill of one of the ditches. This was one of only three such wooden and tips which had been found in England. These features were sealed by a deposit of silty sand, which contained quantities of daub and burnt and struck flint. This deposit was sealed by peat which appeared to have formed during the Late Bronze Age. The peat was covered by thick deposits of alluvial clays which were deposited during periods of flooding. A series of post-medieval drainage ditches which truncated the alluvial deposits were recorded throughout the trench. Post-medieval ground raising dumps had been deposited over the alluvium and drainage ditches. [Au] |
