Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of a watching brief during geotechnical investigation and the excavation of three trial trenches (10m by 3m, 7m by 5m and 7m by 3m), was undertaken prior to the redevelopment of the site. Two zones of activity were identified in the archaeological record supported by documentary evidence, one to the west of the site with high archaeological potential and the other to the east with lower potential due to severe truncation. The two zones were clearly delineated by a post-medieval north-south aligned wall with medieval and post-medieval horticultural activity taking place to the east and a concentration of post-medieval activity to the west. Truncated post-medieval structural remains were also present to the north-east of the site, possibly the remains of a known 18th century mansion known as 'Gothic House', that was demolished sometime in the 19th or early 20th century.
