Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during ground works related to the extension of the Coach & Horses Public House in order to fulfil a condition upon planning permission. Despite a close observation of the foundation treanches and car park extension no pre-modern features were noted. In addition, no artefacts were recovered dating from earlier than the late 19th century from any of the areas, which suggested that these areas had never been directly occupied. This was borne out in the car park extension where a sub-circular spread of dark soil was revealed which was probably the remains of a grubbed out tree from the orchard recorded on the OS map of 1877. In the absence of archaeological data the earliest evidence was, therefore, derived from the surviving fabric of the building (i.e. of 17th/early 18th century date). [Au(adp)] |
