Abstract: |
The evaluation revealed the remains of walls, floors and basements belonging to 19th century properties that would have fronted Chain Street, to the east of the site. A flint wall that had been part of an earlier structure had been incorporated in one of the properties. This was abutted by a rammed chalk floor that was seen to be significantly earlier than one of the 19th century walls. Below this floor were dumped layers overlying medieval ditches and pits.
