Abstract: |
The assessment area lay on the periphery of the substantial Iron Age and Romano-British settlement in Baldock. A previously excavated, large inhumation and cremation cemetery was located directly south of the Maltiings and south of the A505/Icknield Way. It was thought to indicate the northern edge of settlement and probably extended into the development area. Some limited evidence for prehistoric activity was also found on the site. It was possible that the original line of the ancient Icknield Way ran north of the present plotted course (the line of the A505), through the assessment area. [Au] |
