Abstract:
Phase 1 of the Domestic Range Undercroft conversion programme involved archaeological recording in three areas, of which this area was one. At the north east end of the chapel undercroft a new entrance was created through a former window, reached from a new external stair and with a new stair on the inside. The contractors' excavations for the footings of the new internal stair and for replacement flooring were observed, and masonry on the inside of the base of the medieval stair turret adjacent to the new entrance was also recorded before being covered up. New service trenches in the adjacent part of the courtyard were also observed. This area proved to be already extensively disturbed by pipe trenches; however, most of these lay within the 1.2m of the mid-18th century make up and it seems likely that the medieval levels below remain relatively undisturbed.[AIP]
