Abstract:
Trial excavations were undertaken on the proposed development site which lay in the core of the medieval village. Three trenches produced evidence of medieval occupation of the site, ranging in date from the late 11th or early 12th centuries, through to the 14th century. One trench, close to the Main Street frontage, only contained evidence of post-medieval occupation. Two trenches sampled major boundary ditches, which delineated medieval tenements running back from the street frontage; the plots were probably established in the late 11th or early 12th centuries. Traces of a timber-built medieval building were recorded in Trench 3, probably part of an outbuilding which stood behind the street frontage; an associated metalled path and tack were also discovered. Most of the features recorded represented activity to the rear of the plots; gullies and slots indicated possible hedged and fenced subdivisions, the ditches serving to drain as well as to demarcate. Pottery recovered showed that these features continued in usage into the 14th century. By the post-medieval period, most of the site appeared to have become farmland. The medieval plot boundaries remained to influence the layout of properties along Main Street, though some of the boundaries to the rear of the site became redundant. [Au(abr)]
