Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a new sewage treatment works. Ridge and furrow was visible in the field interrupted at the north and south ends of the field. At the northwest end of the field, a metalled surface of limestone slabs set on edge was exposed and partly removed. A scatter of pottery and clay pipes concentrated around this feature were almost all dated to the 17th century but no finds sherds were stratified within the metalling or beneath it. The site therefore appeared to have been part of the open fields of the village since that layout was probably established in the late Anglo-Saxon period. [Au(abr)] |
