Abstract: |
Excavations have shown that the area had been subjected to substantial truncation. In all the excavated trenches the tarmac/concrete surface had been laid directly onto the surface of in-situ bedrock, indicating that the land had been subject to landscaping. Examination of the 1891 OS 2nd edition map shows steps leading down from the gardens to Church Lane. However, it was apparent that the construction of Eveleigh's Garage had removed the upper level of bedrock and with it any surviving archaeological deposits.[Au(abr)] |
