Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for retail sheds and car-parking, which lay within an Area of Archaeological Significance, identified that important Bronze Age remains had been excavated at an adjacent site. These had included regionally important archaeological and environmental deposits of pollen-bearing peat, waterlogged man-made wooden trackways, riverside platforms and revetments. The site of medieval Barking Abbey, a SAM, lay to the south-east of the proposal site. Roman tiles, brick and pottery had been recorded at the abbey, and further Roman artefacts and a cremation had been found in the vicinity. An earlier, Saxon, abbey had existed in the area, although its location was not known. It was anticipated that the proposal site could contain evidence relating to prehistoric, Saxon and medieval activity. It was concluded that an archaeological evaluation of the site would probably be deemed necessary, and that a suitably-spaced pile-pattern could be considered as an appropriate strategy for preservation in situ. On the two-thirds of the site where car-parking was proposed, it was considered likely that archaeological observation of the landscaping would probably be an acceptable insurance against disturbing or exposing otherwise untouched alluvium, which had potential for palaeoenvironmental and archaeological evidence.
