Abstract: |
The work was carried out within a former warehouse. Two intact lengths of roof of the culverted "Law Ditch" were located beneath the floor of the former warehouse. One area of probable post-medieval roof was constructed of stone blocks, while the other comprised a 19th century brick vaulted roof and inspection pit or manhole. A small section of medieval wall was uncovered, as well as several other post-medieval walls and deposits. The survey work at 14 St. Thomas Street involved removing render from the face of a wall and then recording the exposed masonry and mortar beneath. The middle section of wall proved to be built of stone, probably dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, while the eastern and western ends were of late 19th century brick construction. The wall was thought likely to sit on medieval foundations. [Au(abr)] |
