Abstract: |
Trial trenching and test-pitting was undertaken as part of an evaluation of land proposed for a quarry extension. Test-pitting clarified the extent of the alluvial zone to the west of a gravel island and identified a zone with high potential for in situ flint scatters. Trenching revealed three palaeochannels of the River Trent which incorporated significant palaeoenvironmental remains, a complex pattern of inter-cutting ditches associated with Late Iron Age pottery, evidence of Early Bronze Age settlement and a zone of quarrying which may have truncated archaeological deposits.
