Abstract: |
The assessment site lay in the north-east corner of the Roman and medieval City of London, adjacent to the city wall and to the north-west of Aldgate. There were no records for prehistoric remains even though the area around the site had been subject to intensive excavation. During the 17th and 18th centuries the surrounding area was used for industrial purposes such as potting. Sephardic Jews began to settle on the site in the late 17th century and a synagogue was established on the site in 1679. By the late 19th century the site was occupied by shops, dwellings and warehouses grouped around the Great Synagogue. [Au(abr)] |
