Abstract: |
<summary>In October 1990, York Archaeological Trust carried out an evaluative excavation in advance of the construction of a pumping station by Yorkshire Water. Two trenches were excavated immediately to the west of St George's Chapel, on a site known as St George's Field. Boreholes and sample excavation in the 1980s had revealed alluvial deposits indicating regular flooding throughout its history. Excavations revealed late medieval/early post-medieval structural remains sealed by modern deposits. It was considered possible that the medieval remains of St George's Chapel survived largely intact. The site is an important one for understanding the regime of nearby rivers and waterfront activity. {italon}AIP{italoff} |
