Abstract: |
During the watching brief, the earliest features exposed on the site were the well (7), and the possible associated surface (8). These features could not be directly dated, but had been constructed before the later 18th century. The main phase of activity dated to the period between c.1770 and 1840, when the ground on the eastern part of the site (which naturally sloped downhill) was raised up (5). Subsequently a building was constructed to the east, forming the boundary wall to the site. The northern part of the mid-19th century courtyard had a cobbled surface (3). When the range of buildings was constructed against the east boundary (sometime between 1865 and 1933) the north wall (which still forms the boundary of the site) was built over the earlier cobbled surface. Inside this building a new mortar surface (4) was laid over the cobbles. [Au(adp)] |
