Abstract: |
Trial excavations and a geophysical survey were undertaken within an area of the site of the Battle of Neville's Cross, fought on October 17th 1346 between the armies of Scotland and England. Seven trial trenches were positioned over anomalies located by the geophysical survey. Features of probable post-medieval date were recorded in three of the trenches, and a silver threepence of Charles II dated to 1679 was found. Nothing relating to the bloody past of the field was revealed although future large-scale survey and field evaluation may rectify the paucity of archaeological evidence associated with the battle.
