Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning consent for the redevelopment of the site. The site lay within the valley of the River Cray, an attractive location for ancient peoples. Prehistoric flint tools from near the site suggested ancient activity in the area. A major Roman settlement was found to the south-east of the site in 1936 and, although its exact location in now uncertain, Roman coins from gardens nearby would indicate that this settlement was once close to the site. The previous impact on archaeological survival had been limited and mainly arose from the excavations of the foundations of the previous buildings. The main potential archaeological impact of the development proposals would arise from the excavations of foundation bases up to 2m in depth in the north-eastern part of the site. In other areas of the development site, proposals including landscaping would have less potential impact. [Au(adp)] |
