Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development was undertaken. Two undated soil marks recorded on aerial photographs of the area may have indicated the sites of ploughed-out barrows. Roman remains near the site included a road, a ditch and an aqueduct, extant at several locations. Part of the aqueduct ran along the south-eastern side of the site; this section was a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Sixteen 7th-8th century burials had been excavated to the east, whilst post-medieval wall footings and other features had been recorded during work at another nearby site. It was concluded that the development site had potential for remains dating from the Roman period, and possibly others. [AIP] |
