Abstract: |
Derbyshire Archaeological Advisory Committee funded two seasons of research into the Anglo-Saxon archaeology of lowland Derbyshire. The project aimed to address the absence of any recent survey of Anglo-Saxon material in the lowlands by producing a new gazetteer and synthesis of sites and finds. The study area comprised the Derbyshire Trent Valley and its tributaries the Dove and Derwent; the study period c. 450-c.850 AD. Six new sites were identified which took the form of find spots which were not listed on the SMR. The survey identified that the number of early Saxon sites in lowland Derbyshire remained small in spite of the newly identified sites. The potential for further survey was recognised in order to establish the extent of Saxon remains within the area. [AIP] |
