Abstract:
Evaluation work was undertaken in advance of the possible extension of a road, through Pleistocene deposits surviving as a ridge between worked out quarries. The fluvial sequence comprised a series of deposits banked up against a chalk cliff forming the southern edge of a former Thames channel. The sequence was particularly important in two respects. Firstly, fossil remains concentrated in a shell bed within the Purfleet Silts and Sands had a high potential for elucidation of palaeoenvironment and biostratigraphy. Secondly, Wymer's suggestion (1985) that the three principal depositional units contained lithics belonging successively to the Clactonian, Acheulean and Levallois industries was supported for the Corbets Tey Lower Gravel and the Purfleet Silts and Sands, and not contradicted by the small assemblage recovered from the Corbets Tey Upper Gravel. It was concluded that this sequence may have been unique in the European record, and that its confirmation, particularly for the putative Levallois material in the Corbets Tey Upper Gravel, was of high importance.
