Abstract: |
Three test pits were hand excavated in premises situated to the rear of 10 Market Place to evaluate whether the proposed development would have an impact on archaeological deposits and in particular on the castle ditch. A stone-lined drain of probable post-medieval date and demolition deposits of unknown date were recorded in two of the pits. It was uncertain whether the homogenous layer encountered in the most southerly test pit was ditch infill. It was recommended that a watching brief of the proposed development should only be undertaken where the depth of soil removal in areas known to be free of modern disturbances extends below 0.4m.
