Abstract:
The evaluation was undertaken on either side of the River Thames. Two of the trenches on the Kingston side of the river revealed timber revetments and deposits dating to the medieval period. Within trench A at least three phases of north-south aligned timber revetments and a possible east-west revetment were found. These were constructed of driven posts with plank sides, and re-used clinker boat timbers were found to be used in at least one phase of revetment. A further series of driven posts were found which may have represented the foundations for a building on the foreshore of the Thames. Overlying the medieval revetments was an elm baseplate aligned north-south, plus a probable collapsed upright. This baseplate may have been a foundation timber for a 16th/17th century jetty. Waterlain silt deposits were also found overlying the natural gravel within trenches A and B which contained tile, bone and pottery dating to the 14th and 15th centuries. In trench B these were overlaid by 17th- and 18th-century brick walls; these were aligned east-west and presumably defined property boundaries which ran from Thames Street to the river. The final trench, on the Richmond bank of the Thames, produced some 18th- and 19th-century finds but no significant archaeological remains. Natural gravel was encountered at a much higher level and the trench clearly lay beyond the historic limits of the river. [Au]
