Abstract:
A desk-based assessment of the proposed route of new dual carriageway bypassing Stavely and Brimington and linking with the M1 at Barlborough identified twelve sites affected by the proposals: the line of a possible Roman road at Bilby Lane; earthworks of a medieval and post-medieval field system at Hawthorn Hill Farm; the findspot of a carved stone head of 14th century date possibly representing an architectural fragment of an earlier building on the site; Beightonfields Priory, a possible medieval hospital site; the Bowden family burial ground at Beighton Fields; early documented coal mining sites at Beighton Fields; the Chesterfield Canal; Norbriggs Cutting; the possible sites of a medieval bridge at Norbriggs; Staveley Mill, the possible site of a medieval mill and later mills on the RIver Rother; the Staveley-Barlborough parish boundary; and relict watercourses with a high palaeoenvironmental potential surviving near the present rivers and streams.
