Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation (two trenches) and watching brief took place prior to, and during, a residential development on former agricultural land. The excavations exposed a range of ditches, pits and other features, many of which were identified by a previous geophysical survey. The bulk of the occupation was dated to between the 15th and 16th centuries, although earlier and layer material was also present. Many of the features that were sampled appeared to have been purposefully backfilled in the early post-medieval period, suggesting a major reorganisation of the landscape at this time. A date for the foundation of Old Main Road was not established, although the evidence presented in this report suggested that the road was post-medieval. [Au(abr)] |
