Abstract:
The desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site, which wholly lay within the western portiion of Dudsbury hillfort, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, prior to the determination of planning permission for the proposed extension to the existing Girl Guides camp. The report concluded that no previous archaeological investigations on the site could assist in determining the exact nature of the buried resouorce of the monument which might be affected by any future development. The exact positions of the only recorded intrusive investigations within the enclosure were not known. The history of the land-use suggested that arable agriculture may have caused damage to any buried remains by plough action, although the depth of overburden may have been such that penetration into in situ deposits was rare. The laying of modern services, none of which were monitored for archaeological purposes, may have locally affected deposits, but this could not be assessed from the present information. The continued use of the site by the Girl Guides appeared to have no adverse affects either to the physical integrity off the site, or to its setting. The proposed demolition of the existing chalet and other outbuildings would, however, improve the setting of the mounument. The proposed extensions to the main building would rationalise the use of the site, but may disturb or destroy buried archaeological remains that would have ultimately detract from the overall value of the monument.
