Abstract: |
A geophysical survey and archaeological excavation located the flowerbeds of the former Sub-Tropical Garden and confirmed the overall veracity of the 19th century maps showing their layout, though with slight modifications. Though the plan was consistent, the depths and fills of the beds varied across the garden, perhaps suggesting that some of the beds were prepared differently in order to accommodate specific plant types. Alternatively the differing fills may have been due to the inconsistent nature of the underlying soil which comprised made ground. [Au(abr)] |
