Abstract: |
Archaeological desktop assessment, rapid field survey and geophysical prospection were undertaken at the site of a proposed housing development covering nearly 70ha to the north-west of Redditch. The work formed the initial stage of a programme of works required in advance of a full planning application. The aim was to identify areas of potential archaeological significance within the development area and provide recommendations for a \nsecond stage of works targeted at any such areas identified. A number of areas of potential were identified for further recording and/or evaluation trenching. Two areas of earthworks relating to water management were identified in the form of a dam and canalised water channels. In one case, on the Batchley Brook, these were associated with further earthworks in the form of a number of platforms. These features, whilst undated at present, are potentially medieval and associated with the nearby Abbey at Bordesley. Although geophysical survey failed to indicate the presence of any buried features, such as structures, associated with these, the results were inconclusive. Study of the 1840 tithe map and apportionments provided evidence of a backfilled fishpond near Birchensale Farm. Two pillboxes and a further Second World War defensive feature were recorded in fields close to this farm; these are believed to relate to the defensive works constructed to protect Birmingham. A number of field banks, ditches, lynchets and areas of ridge and furrow were also recorded.[AIP] |
