Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site in advance of proposed development. Peat horizons had been identified during recent geotechnical works on the site, which may have been of palaeoenvironmental significance. The planning authorities may request the archaeological assessment of these deposits prior to the development of the site. There was no other indication of significant archaeological deposits within the proposed development area; the area lay outside of the medieval centre of Rothbury, and appeared to have been undeveloped until the construction of Rothbury Motors Garage in the early 20th century. The garage was a Listed Building, along with several other structures in the immediate area. The proposed development should be designed sympathetically to take account of the historic environment. Building construction technique and design should be selected to prevent damage to the garage foundations. [Au(abr)] |
