Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during repair work at Pleshey Castle Bridge, a brick-built bridge which linked the motte of Pleshey Castle to the southern bailey. The castle had been built by the mid-12th century, whilst the bridge dated from the 15th century and was one of only two such bridges surviving in Europe. Previous excavation had revealed that the present structure had been preceded by one of timber which had been supported on flint rubble piers. The repairs involved renewing the road deck and installing a drainage system to carry rain water from the deck into the ditch below. Replacement of the road deck necessitated the removal of the existing surface, which was made up of modern materials. The exposed bridge core was similarly made up of modern rubble. No structural features were revealed. The excavation of the pipe trenches for drainage also failed to expose any features or artefacts of archaeological interest. The excavated material consisted largely of topsoil and turf which contained occasional fragments of brick. [AIP] |
