Abstract: |
The evaluation undertaken at the Potters Wheel site, comprised the machine-excavation of six trenches and two trial pits. All trenches, except for Trench 2, contained either evidence for subsoil features or structural features thought to be associated with use of the nearby pottery kiln. These features comprised of a former cottage and foundations for another structure which were both shown on the 1885 and 1901 25" Ordnance Survey maps. The discovery of several sherds with manganese glaze, including probable kiln furniture, was considered to represent pre -1790 production techniques and may indicate that pottery manufacture was being undertaken on the site at an earlier date than previously thought.[Au(abr)] |
