Abstract: |
The watching brief confirmed that a number of deep cut archaeological features did still survive below the present basement floor of the 1877 building. The features encountered included rubbish and cess pits of unknown date, a fragment of a 16th century cellar wall foundation and a post-medieval well. Previous archaeological work at 1-3 Ludgate Square and within the surrounding area indicated that the site lay within the site of a Norman fortress known as Montfichet's Tower. It was not clear however whether Ludgate Square lay within the bailey or the site of the motte. The results from the geo-technical investigation failed to clarify these interpretations. [Au(adp)] |
