Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of the northern foundation trenches for a new house. Upon arrival at the site it was discovered that an area slightly larger than the footprint of the new building had already been reduced in level by c.0.15m. This had then been covered with a layer of hardcore. Foundation trenches were then excavated through the layer of hardcore. No evidence of medieval occupation was found on the site, possibly because it was too far back from the street frontage. The site was on a relatively steep west to east slope and the reduction of soil level prior to the site visit had already removed most of the soil on top of the geological natural. The topsoil only contained finds of a 19th century date and may have been the remains of a garden soil. [Au(abr)] |
