Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site prior to the proposed residential development of the site. The history of the site was documented by a study of historic maps, books, articles and the GLSMR records from the site's locale. This information indicated that the site was an area of cultivation until some small structures were built in the southern area of the site in the 19th century. The northern part of the site had remained undeveloped until it became a car park later this century. The archaeological potential for prehistoric artefacts and structures being recovered from the site was considered to be moderate. The potential for discovery of finds from the Roman and Saxon period was considered to be low. The greatest archaeological potential was for medieval and post-medieval structural remains and associated features. Further archaeological mitigation in the form of an archaeological evaluation waas recommended. [Au(adp)] |
