Abstract:
Archaeological observations were made during the excavation of a trench for a drain and manhole cover in the north-west corner of the 19th century nave of a church. The external face of the north wall of the nave of the medieval church was revealed. This was solidly constructed of mortared Hamhill stone blocks, of which two courses were extant above a wider foundation which included substantial stone blocks. The medieval wall face ran parallel to and 2.30m south of the external face of the present nave wall, indicating that the medieval nave was at least 4.5m narrower overall than the present nave. A single adult burial was partly exposed, 0.70m north of the medieval wall. No evidence of the date of the burial was recovered, but it clearly pre-dated the 19th century extension of the nave. Two flat slabs of stone revealed in the base of the drain trench close to its eastern end may have marked the position of another grave. Both graves woud originally have lain within the graveyard to the north of the church. [Au(abr)]
