Abstract: |
A desk-top assessment of a proposed redevelopment site was undertaken. During construction work in 1936, much of the post-Roman stratigraphy was truncated, but a considerable depth of archaeological deposits, primarily of Roman date, was observed beneath the basement slab. Excavations in the surrounding area had discovered Roman buildings, Saxon and medieval pits and an early medieval building. It was concluded that limited excavation or a watching brief should be carried out, depending on the extent of the groundworks. [AIP] |
