Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during ground disturbance works in advance of development at a site which had been used as a railway goods station in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Previous evaluation of the site had revealed a yard surface, drains, infilled ditches and a brick wall associated with construction of the goods yard, and an earlier cultivation soil. During the watching brief, brick-built buildings with basements, a cobbled surface and two railway turntables dating from the 19th century were recorded. Activity pre-dating the goods yard was represented by sub-surface deposits which included silts containing 19th century ceramic fragments, and sandy silts containing fragments of 16th and 17th century ceramic and charcoal.
