Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which lay close to the remains of medieval Reigate Castle, a SAM. Three linear features were revealed which were interpreted as field boundaries, and which seemed to pre-date the tithe map. They had probably originated in the late medieval or earlier post-medieval period, and indicated that the former field within which they lay had once been sub-divided into smaller enclosures. A number of modern service trenches which were not marked on existing plans were located. These were thought to have been part of a private pipe system associated with 1920s development of the area. Two undated post-holes and a pit which contained a fragment of brick, suggesting a post-medieval date, were also recorded. [Au(adp)] |
